"THE PLACE WHERE THE GODS TURNED INTO MEN"

Exhibit of paintings, object art, and a movable mural

A contemporary vision of prehispanic art, myths and legends of the Mixtec-Zapotec and Mayan Zone.

"...It was said by the anciet that when they die, men wouldn't perish but rather being to live again, as if waking from a dream and that they would turn into spirits or gods..."

Sahagún

Background:

Tourist developments in our country such as the ones at the coast of Oaxaca are windows of Mexico to the people from other places. It is of vital importance that artistic and cultural expressions represent the true values of the region. The object is to avoid the false and frivolous appearance of a cultural vacuum and to separate this values from the centers of recreation and entertainment.

Objective:

Research, prepare, elaborate, assemble and promote an exhibit of a contemporary interpretation of our prehispanic and folklorist legacy in an itinerant form beyond the borders of the country. This also servers to promote tourism in the state of Oaxaca and the southeast of Mexico..

Thematic Content of the Exhibit:

  • Different interpretations of the iconographic style of the "Nuttal" mixteco-zapoteco codes.
  • Geometric applications of decorations and lintels from the arqueological sites of Mitla, Montealban and Lambityeco.
  • Abstract graphic interpretation of Mayan relief stones.
  • Re-creation of characters from the main prehispanic and folkloristic legends of Oaxaca: "El Lugar de los Hombres sin Sombra".
  • Shells, women, tides, foams, eclipses, and nautical themes.
